North Dakota Real Estate Principles Pre-Licensure Course

Approved by the North Dakota Real Estate Commission
CE Hours: 5.4 CEU's
Cost: $450, plus cost of textbook

Upon successful completion you receive a completion certificate and a transcript showing 5.4 Continuing Education Units (CEU's) earned from the Division of Continuing Education, University of North Dakota. The CEU is a nationally accepted standard for measuring and recording noncredit continuing education coursework.

Review North Dakota agency laws and rules, and how you can utilize this information in everyday interactions with clients. The course prepares you for what takes place in the closing process so that you can better represent your client by assisting the closing agent and lender throughout the process. This should result in a smoother transaction for all parties and reduce the risk of liability that results from problem closings. The course also addresses North Dakota law relating to the holding and release of earnest money.

Marketplace Ethics & Professionalism

This course is designed to sensitize you to proper thinking and conduct in the marketplace. Key concepts in ethics (dilemmas and decision-making, codes of conduct and training) and professionalism (business etiquette and emotional intelligence) are introduced. Self-assessment questionnaires and reflection essays are used to provoke personal application of the concepts presented. The course goal is to equip you with an actionable understanding of your own marketplace ethics and professionalism.

Contracts

Examine topics relevant to real estate contracts, including entities for ownership of real estate, exchanges, purchase agreements and real estate lending. This course familiarizes you with the documentation used in real estate purchases, sales and financing. You will also gain a clearer understanding of tax-free exchanges when utilized by your clients. Finally, an overview of the various types of entities that own real estate is presented in order to assist you in dealing with entity clients.

Risk Reduction

Discuss topics on risk reduction as it relates to North Dakota real estate, including cancellation of contracts for deed, evictions, marketable record title affidavit, surveys and financing. This course provides you with an overview of the various procedures utilized by lawyers in addressing title defects or adverse issues relating to real estate such as evictions or foreclosures. By understanding the basics of these procedures, you can better advise clients when title issues appear in their transactions.

About the Course Authors:

Grant H. Shaft, J.D., is an attorney at law with Shaft, Reis and Shaft in Grand Forks. He graduated from the University of North Dakota Law School and was admitted to the North Dakota State Bar Association in 1986. He specializes in commercial real estate, residential real estate, and title insurance. He is a member of the State Bar Association of North Dakota (Member, Title Standards Committee; Chairman, Real Property, Probate and Trust Section; Member, Board of Governors), American Bar Association, and the American College of Real Estate Lawyers.

Connie R. Bateman, D.B.A., joined the Department of Marketing at the University of North Dakota in 1995 as an Assistant Professor, was tenured in 2001, and was promoted to Associate Professor in 2004. She earned a Doctorate in Business Administration (1998) in Marketing from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale as well as an MBA (1990), B.S. in Psychology (1989), and B.A. in Sociology (1989) from UND. Her research focuses on managerial and consumer decision-making processes, ethical behaviors and reasoning processes. Along with Dr. John P. Fraedrich, Jannetides Professor of Business Ethics at SIUC, she received a Best Paper Award for their collaborative research about the framing effects on the ethical decision-making process.
