When can I enroll? How?

Correspondence & Online Studies offers open enrollment, which means you may enroll at any time and take up to nine months to complete your coursework. The courses are not semester based, but are recorded on your transcript in the semester you enroll in.

There are several ways to enroll in a course. Applications can be submitted online through the Course List, by telephone at (701) 777-2661 or 800-342-8230, by fax at (701) 777-6382, by mail to Department of Correspondence & Online Studies, UND Division of Continuing Education, 3264 Campus Road Stop 9021, Grand Forks, ND 58202-9021, or in person at Gustafson Hall on the UND campus. Call or visit us between 8:00 AM and 4:30 PM (CST).

Can I take UND required General Education courses through COS?

Yes. Please view our list of General Education courses available through COS.

Is financial aid available?

Students enrolled exclusively in correspondence courses for a term are only eligible to apply for Alternative Education Loans. Correspondence courses are NOT eligible for federal or state financial aid consideration.

The Financial Aid Office has a website specifically for students enrolling in Correspondence Study courses who seek financial aid assistance. Please read the terms carefully at http://www.und.edu/dept/finaid/Correspondence_Study.html

If you have specific questions regarding financial aid for Correspondence & Online Studies courses, please contact the UND Financial Aid Office at 1-800-CALL-UND (ext. 73121) or 701-777-3121.

If you have any questions regarding Correspondence & Online Studies courses, please contact us 1-800-342-8230 or 701-777-2661.

How do I purchase my textbook and materials?

Textbooks and materials can be ordered online through MBS Direct at http://bookstore.mbsdirect.net/UNDCE.HTM or by calling (800) 325-3252, or fax your order to 1-800-499-0143. The website will list the required textbooks for the course you select. Textbooks and materials should be ordered promptly after enrollment to ensure availability.

What is an E-Paper course?

E-Paper courses are designed and written as traditional correspondence courses. However, a copy of the syllabus and lessons for these courses is set up in our online course management system (Blackboard). Students are able to submit lessons and receive graded lessons online via Blackboard versus sending them through the mail. Exams in some E-Paper courses are only offered by mail. The benefits of enrolling in an E-Paper course are:

  1. Save on mailing costs and time.
  2. Automatic grading on multiple-choice, matching, and true/false assignments, quizzes, and some exams.
  3. Instructor receives lessons in a timelier manner--allowing for speedier feedback.
  4. Students can track their grades online in Blackboard through its Gradebook feature.

What is the difference between an E-Paper course and an Online course?

Online courses are set up as fully interactive courses in our online course management system (Blackboard), complete with a syllabus, individual lessons, instructor notes, interactive exercises, media, resources, and other online links and features. All assignments and proctored exams are done online. (Note: A few online courses have portions (or all) of their exams delivered through traditional mail). See FAQ above for an E-Paper course definition.

How do paper (mail) and online courses work?

The procedures for taking a course are highlighted in Getting Started in Your Course and can be found on our Web site.

How do I take exams?

Your course materials will contain specific information regarding each exam.  All exams must be supervised by a certified/approved exam administrator (proctor) or may be taken at the UND Gustafson Hall testing center on the UND campus.

We recommend you designate a proctor as soon as you are enrolled in the course.  Please follow these steps to secure your proctor and for more information regarding taking exams:

Step 1: Read the Proctor Policy.
Step 2: Designate a proctor using this online Proctor Designation Form.
Step 3: The Correspondence & Online Studies office will certify/verify your proctor after receipt of your Proctor Designation Form.  You will be notified if your proctor is not approved.  Exams will not be sent until your proctor is certified.
Step 4: Submit a Request for Examination form located in your course materials (and online) when you are ready to take each exam.

Please note that all lessons and prior exams must be received by our office before an exam will be sent (or password released for online courses). When taking an exam, you may not use books, notes, or other materials unless otherwise indicated. A picture ID is required. A test can be sent via overnight delivery if the expense is pre-paid. We will not accept a credit card number as pre-payment of the cost to fulfill a request of Federal Express overnight delivery of a test.

What if my time is about to run out?

You have nine months from your enrollment date to complete a course. If you need additional time for course completion, you may purchase one three-month extension for $35.00. You must request the extension prior to the deadline date for the course. The letter I for incomplete will be noted on your transcript. If your request for an extension and fee are not received by the deadline date for the course, your course will end and a failing grade will be earned. If this occurs, you must re-enroll and resubmit full tuition and fees in order to continue the course. You can request an extension online by filling out our Extension Request Form.

You have 30 days to withdraw from a course without academic penalty and record on your transcript. If you withdraw after 30 days, a W will be recorded on your transcript. If you fail to withdraw or complete the course, your course will end, and a failing grade will be earned. Notification of a withdrawal must be submitted in writing to the Department of Correspondence & Online Studies. You can withdraw from a course by filling out our Withdrawal/Refund Form, printing the page, signing the request and mailing or faxing it to the Department of Correspondence & Online Studies (the address is provided on the form).

ATTENTION UND CAMPUS STUDENTS : All Correspondence & Online courses must be completed to graduate. All assignments and exams must be completed and submitted no less than three weeks before your deadline.

If you are a UND student on academic probation, you are required to complete your correspondence course in the same semester in which you registered.

How do I obtain a transcript?

Procedures for requesting a transcript have changed as of November 1, 2006 .

You may request a transcript by following the instructions on the Office of the Registrar’s Official Transcripts or Verification website. Please note there is a $5.00 charge for a transcript.

Before you request your transcript, please verify your final grades have been posted to your transcript. You may view your unofficial transcript by following the instructions at http://www.und.edu/dept/registrar/campusconnection/index.htm. Please allow 2-3 days for posting of final grades.
