The University of North Dakota (UND), founded in 1883, is a nationally prominent, student-focused doctoral university with outstanding professional programs, cutting-edge research, and creative scholarship. UND enrolls nearly 13,000 motivated and academically-prepared students from every state and more than 50 countries. It is one of only 47 public universities in the country with both an accredited law and medical school. U.S. News & World Report consistently lists UND among the "Top 200 Best National Universities" in the country. In 2006, UND was named one of the top 100 colleges and universities in the nation by Washington Monthly.

All students, no matter their major, will receive a well-rounded, balanced education that emphasizes superior critical thinking and communication skills. As a UND student, you will be encouraged to develop a creative, innovative, and entrepreneurial spirit that equips you to succeed and become a leader of tomorrow. Currently, more than 97% of UND graduates are employed or furthering their education, and 9 out of 10 UND graduates work in their degree field.

The University of North Dakota has a strong history in distance education, offering correspondence by mail courses since 1910. Today, more than 7,000 students enroll in UND’s distance and online courses each year. The UND College of Education & Human Development, Department of Teaching and Learning offers two online options for individuals wanting to further their education in the area of special education. A Master of Science or Master of Education in Special Education allows you to focus coursework in a number of specific areas, including developmental/cognitive disabilities, emotional disturbance, and learning disabilities.
