Step 2 --Talk with an advisor. If you have not talked with an advisor, you will want to do this prior to registering, please call toll free 877.450.1842 to identify the appropriate advisor for your program.

Step 3 -- After you are admitted, you are eligible to register for your class(es). You register by first getting a Special Permission number(s) at http://www.conted.und.edu/ddp/RegistrationInformation.html , and then using the class number(s) and special permission number(s) in CampusConnection to officially register.

Undergraduate Admission

The application process is started one year before each term. The earlier you apply and are admitted, the more options you'll have for financial aid, scholarships, registering and classes.

Go online to the Admission Estimator at http://go.und.edu/admission-estimator/index.asp where you'll see what GPA and standardized scores you need to be automatically admitted.

Program Format

The Distance Engineering Degree Program provides instruction through online lectures and on-campus labs.

Online Lectures

The online lectures started Fall 2003. The desktop of the computer the instructor is using is captured and compressed into an audio/video file that plays in Real Networks ' RealOne Player. The lectures are available to the student via a link on a web page where the student can view the lecture via a streaming server or download the lecture for viewing at a later time.

On-Campus Labs

Some courses in the Distance Engineering Degree Program have a laboratory component. Students complete laboratory requirements on the UND campus in Grand Forks, usually during the summer. It is expected that labs will be taken the summer immediately following the corresponding lecture course to ensure familiarity with the course material.

These labs are held in a complessed time frame, usually in June. The length of stay on the UND campus for a lab is generally determined by the number of credits: 3-5 days for a one-credit lab, 7-9 days for a two-credit lab, and up to 14 days for a three-credit lab.

The Distance Engineering staff will help students with all arrangements for attending the labs and staying on campus.

UND faculty are working on ways to deliver labs in other formats (i.e. Internet delivery, partnering with other schools, or utilizing students work sites for labs).

Financial Aid

If you are seeking financial aid, you must complete the appropriate FAFSA form. Grants and loans are available to those eligible. More information on available programs and eligibility requirements can be found on the UND Student Financial Aid Office Web site.

If you have questions about financial aid, you can e-mail the UND Student Financial Aid Office.

General Education Requirements (GERs)

Beginning your coursework with Correspondence & Online Studies. If you do not have any college credit or still have General Education Requirements (GERs) to complete, UND's Correspondence & Online Studies Program may be right for you. Register today! You don't have to wait for the beginning of a semester--and you get up to nine months to complete a class.

Exams

All tests are proctored. Exams and instruction sheets will be sent to approved Distance Engineering proctors. Each Distance Engineering student must make arrangements with the proctor regarding the exam time and location. If there is more than one student in the course at the same company location, the students will take the tests at the same time. The student(s) and the proctor work out a convenient time to take the exam prior to the deadline set on the course syllabus by the instructor. The deadline for completing each exam and other relevant information will be on the exam instruction sheets. Exams should be scheduled as early as possible to avoid last-minute problems. The proctor follows the guidelines set by the instructor for the test. Upon completion of the test, the proctor forwards the test to the Distance Engineering Degree Program office at the University of North Dakota. The DEDP Manager will log in the test and forward it to the instructor for grading. The instructor grades the test and returns the graded test to the DEDP Manager who will then send it back to the student.

Approved Distance Engineering Degree Program proctors: Proctor form
public librarians, educational administrators, counselors, military education officers, clergy, human resource personnel, testing centers, or others as approved.
The proctor should not be a co-worker, supervisor or secretary within your division/department.

Grading

You may check your schedule, view your grades, and printout an "unofficial" copy of your transcript anytime through Campus Connection at http://www.und.nodak.edu/dept/registrar/campusconnection/index.htm

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Does DEDP use the same curriculum as the on-campus classes?

Yes, the Distance Engineering Degree Program uses the same curriculum as the on-campus engineering degree program. It offers the same content and rigor as the on-campus students receive, but in a different format (online).

How long does it take to get admitted to UND?

All students must be admitted to UND before enrolling in a DEDP online course. There are two forms of admission (full admission and non-degree admission) and the student can select either type of admission to get started in DEDP.

How long will it take me to finish the bachelors of science degree online?

The answer is "it depends". If you are beginning with little or no college credit, you may want to begin by taking the General Education Requirements (GERs) at a regionally accredited local institution of higher education or through UND's Correspondence & Online Studies program. By doing this, you could complete 60 hours including GERs, math, chemistry and physics in four years by taking two courses each fall and spring semester and one course in the summer.

If you have previous college credit that will transfer into UND and that can be used toward the program of study, the time frame for completion will be less than starting with little or no college credit. Generally, if a student has the GERs out of the way, plus physics, chemistry and calculus requirements, it takes approximately 6-8 years to complete the degree if you take two classes each semester. Again, this is only a general guideline.

A potential DEDP student once said, "I'll be close to 50 when I graduate with my engineering degree through distance education." His colleague turned to him and said, "Well, you could be 50 and have a degree, or you could be 50 and not have a degree." It is never too late to get started!

What is the time frame for finishing each DEDP online course?

Each course scheduled in the fall and spring semester are based on the UND 16-week semester.
Course extensions are possible only when a student has satisfactorily kept up with the assigned homework and tests within four weeks of the close of the semester.

If I haven't taken math for several years, how do I find out if I am ready to begin Calculus I, Math 165?

A calculus readiness test is available and should be taken to identify your readiness to begin
Calculus I. This test is required if you are seeking non-degree admission status (since your transfer credit has not yet been evaluated). If you have had college algebra and trigonometry (both courses are prerequisites to calculus I) that transfers into UND and can be used toward the program of study, you are not required to take the calculus readiness test but may choose to do so.

You may find it necessary to contact one of your professors to get help with a question or concern. At the beginning of each course, professors distribute a schedule of office hours for receiving telephone calls (normally about five hours per week). You can also contact your professor by fax or e-mail. If you have a question on a problem that requires extensive mathematical or graphical explanations, using the fax may be particularly helpful. The professor can write in explanations on the faxed sheet and fax it back to you.
