Admission Procedures and Requirements

For those interested in a Masters Degree in Education with a Cognate in ELL Education.

The Master's Degree in Education with a Cognate in ELL Education is for those interested in obtaining a full master's degree. The program can also lead to English as a Second Language/Bilingual Education Endorsement.

  1. Apply to the University of North Dakota’s Graduate School for a Masters degree in Early Childhood Education, Elementary Education, Reading Education, or General Studies (for secondary teachers).
  2. For information on which degree program to apply to, please contact Dr. Anne Walker at anne.walker@und.nodak.edu or 701.777.3162.
  3. Complete the online admission form for the UND Graduate School at: http://www.und.edu/dept/grad/
  4. Pay the application fee of $35 as part of the online admission process.
  5. Submit a Statement of Goals and Objectives (see Graduate School Web site for more information).
  6. Forward two official transcripts (sealed by a Registrar) of undergraduate and graduate course work to: UND Graduate School, Twamley Hall Room 414, 264 Centennial Drive Stop 8178, Grand Forks, ND 58202-8178
  7. Submit three letters of recommendation (see Graduate School Web site to download the forms).

For those interested in ELL/Bilingual Education Endorsement coursework only

If you are seeking a convenient way to obtain an ELL/Bilingual Endorsement, UND provides the necessary coursework. This is a great option for those not interested in seeking a master's degree.

  • Enrollment Requirements:
    . Minimum undergraduate GPA of 3.0 to be enrolled as a non-degree seeking graduate student at UND. Please note that if you enroll with a non-degree status, up to nine graduate credits can be transferred into a graduate program of study at a later time.

  • . If you are seeking K-12 North Dakota ELL/Bilingual Education Endorsement, you must already hold either an elementary or secondary teaching license in the state of North Dakota or be eligible for such licensure.

1. Admission to UND’s Graduate School:
a. Request admission through UND’s Graduate School as a non-degree seeking graduate student. The online admission form can be found at: http://www.und.edu/dept/grad/
b. Pay the $35 application fee as part of the online admission process.

2. ELL/Bilingual Endorsement Application Process:
a. Letter of interest stating why you are interested in working with English Language Learners.
b. A sealed letter of reference from a teaching supervisor who can attest to your ability to work with diverse learners.
c. An unofficial copy of each college transcript.
d. Mail all application materials to:
