Career
Options for School Counselors
School counselors assist students of all levels,
from elementary school to secondary education. They
work with parents, teachers, school administrators,
school psychologists, medical professionals, and
social workers to develop and implement strategies
to help students succeed.
School counselors help students to:
- evaluate
and develop realistic academic and career
goals.
understand
and deal with social, behavioral, and
personal problems.
For information
on the role of a school counselor, and to search
for school counseling jobs, visit the American School
Counselor Association.
According to the U.S. Department of Labor, employment
for school counselors is expected to grow about as
fast as the average for all occupations.
Demand for school counselors may increase due
to:
-
more
states requiring elementary schools to employ
counselors.
-
expansion
of the responsibilities, including becoming
more involved in crisis and preventive counseling.
Job prospects should be good because
many school counselors are leaving the occupation
to retire; however, opportunities may be more
favorable in rural and urban areas, rather
than the suburbs, because it is often difficult
to recruit people to these areas.
For specific information on the nature of the work,
job outlook, and earnings, view the Occupational
Outlook Handbook from the U.S. Department of
Labor, Bureau of Labor Statistics.
