Designed for qualified, experienced registered nurses who want to earn their
bachelor's or master's degree in nursing.

Specializations available in
Nursing Education Specialization, Gerontology Nurse Specialization, and
Public/Community Health Clinical Nurse Specialization.

RN to MS Program of Study

The streamlined RN/MS curriculum allows you to earn your master's degree without first completing the requirements for a bachelor's degree in nursing. You will first apply to UND's undergraduate nursing program after completing at least 45 credits of prerequisite coursework. Then, after successfully completing 20 credits of nursing coursework at the baccalaureate level, you may be eligible to apply to the UND Graduate School for entry into one of the master's specializations.

MS Prerequisite Coursework = Minimum of 45 Credits with Grades of C or Better

  • English Composition I (3 Credits)
  • English Composition II or Technical and Business Writing (3 Credits)
  • Additional Communication Course (3 Credits)
  • Introduction to Psychology (3 Credits)
  • Developmental Psychology (3-4 Credits)
  • Introduction to Sociology or Social Problems or Cultural Anthropology (3 Credits)
  • Math, Science, and Support Courses including: Anatomy, Microbiology, Nutrition, Physiology, and Statistics (18 Credits)
  • Arts & Humanities Courses (9 Credits)

Typically, you may transfer some of the prerequisite credits from another regionally accredited institution. For most of the above prerequisite courses, you also may complete independent study courses offered online or by mail through UND's Correspondence & Online Studies Program.

MS Nursing Program Admission Requirements

  • An associate degree in nursing from a regionally accredited institution
  • Minimum GPA of 3.0 in undergraduate coursework
  • Successful completion of prerequisite coursework in Communication; Social Science; and Math, Science, and Support Courses (see above)
  • Current, unencumbered RN license in the United States
  • Minimum of 1 year of experience as a registered nurse (recommended)
  • An interview

Note: If you do not meet these admission standards, you may be admitted on a provisional basis with continued enrollment contingent on successful completion of prerequisite coursework and/or successful performance in the program.

Total Bachelor-Level Course Requirements = 20 Credits (Online)

NURS 282 Health Promotion (2 Credits)
NURS 302 Pathophysiology (3 Credits)
NURS 324 Public Health Nursing (2 Credits)
NURS 350 Nursing in Transition (3 Credits)
NURS 374 Public Health Nursing Clinical (2 Credits; Conducted Near Local Community)
NURS 474 Professional Development II (5 Credits)
NURS 490 Transcultural Healthcare Theories, Research, & Practice (3 Credits)

Following successful completion of required coursework at the bachelor's level, you may apply for admission to the UND Graduate School to complete your MS degree. Depending on the nursing specialization you choose, you will be required to complete 37 to 59 credits of graduate coursework.

You may complete master-level specializations in:

*Fully online; you will complete the teaching practicum near your local community.

**Combination of on-campus and online courses are needed to complete the master-level courses in the specialization.
