Application review begins June 1 for Fall Semester or November 1 for Spring Semester

The University of North Dakota's Master's in Special Education online program prepares you to serve students with mild to moderate disabilities in a variety of settings, including schools, hospitals, state and private institutions, or other human service agencies. As a graduate of the two-year program, you will be qualified to diagnose difficulties for children and young adults, to plan curricular approaches, and to develop and deliver instructional programs with the help of other pertinent professionals in the school.

Through online courses, you will:

  • learn concepts, practices, and approaches that benefit children with school-related difficulties.
  • apply what you have learned in a practicum/internship setting so you can further refine diagnostic and prescriptive skills with children and young adults.
  • view your specialty within the broader context of the school setting by becoming familiar with issues, trends, and research that mark contemporary education.
  • be encouraged to have an inquiring and questioning attitude toward your profession.
  • become conversant with the literature of the field and be encouraged to be a lifelong learner.

Depending on your interests and career goals, you can earn either a Master of Education or Master of Science degree and focus your coursework in one of seven different emphasis areas:

  • General Special Education
  • Developmental/Cognitive Disabilities
  • Educational Strategist
  • Autistic Spectrum Disorders
  • Emotional Disturbance
  • Learning Disabilities
  • Early Childhood Special Education

".UND Continuing Education [is] a great help to students such as me, who live in the 'hinterlands' of rural North Dakota. In my case, we live in the extreme southwest portion of the state. I wouldn't have been able to get my Master's in Education in May 2006 unless it was for the great program UND offers. Rhame School district reorganized with Bowman and the newly reorganized school district is the Bowman County School District ...without my recent UND Masters - Special Education Strategist, I wouldn't have a job! Let alone be able to truly follow my dreams...I know it sounds corny but it's true."
