BRIAN HAS EVEN MORE CHANGES IN HIS LIFE
I have accepted a position with the Center for Rural Health as a Web Database Specialist and will begin my work there on January 15. My time at DCE, both as a student employee and as a full-time employee, have been wonderful. I appreciate all of you who have helped me along the way as I have grown both professionally and personally. Thanks

Brian Barclay

While we are happy for Brian and his new opportunity at UND, he will be missed at DCE. He started work with the Online Team as a student providing Blackboard and graphics/media support, and we were fortunate to hire him full-time when he graduated from UND. He took on many roles and contributed to the Online Team and DCE in many ways. We wish him well as he continues his career at UND. Brian's last day is Monday, January 14.

Jane Sims, Online Team

DEPARTMENTS SHOULD NOT ACCEPT CANADIAN CURRENCY
Effective January 1, 2008, Student Account Services (formerly Business Office) will no longer accept Canadian currency.

Departments accepting money should discontinue accepting Canadian currency from students, vendors, and any other customers. Signage should be displayed within the department notifying students and customers of this change.

Departments accepting payment by check written from a Canadian financial institution should inform the vendor or student to write "Payable in US Dollars" on the check. This will ensure that the funds will be processed at the bank in US Dollars and not in Canadian currency.

If you have any questions regarding this change, please contact Sandi Brelie at 777-3080 or by e-mail at sandiebrelie@mail.und.nodak.edu . -- Student Account Services.

JUST SO YOU KNOW

GRAMMAR GOALS

Dean Riedy Endorses Across-the-Board Raises of .10%

Whooo Hooo! What a great way to start his tenure with DCE. I liked him as soon as I met him.

Dean Riedy is a smart guy; he and Odella both know that .10% raises are not enough compensation for the staff of DCE. “You mean the raises will be higher in the future?” I hope so. I also hope your leg is still in its hip socket.

Note the decimal point. A raise of .10% is not a 10 percent raise. It is a raise of 1/10 of 1 percent. If you earn $10,000 per year, a .10% raise is $10, not $1,000. This error occurs quite frequently. Expressing a percentage in writing is not the same as calculating a percentage; however, writers frequently retain the decimal point they would key into a calculator when calculating a percentage.

Now back to reality. If you receive a raise, it most likely will be somewhere between .10% and 10%.

INFO EXCHANGE

FOUND: GLASS PLATTER
We have had a glass platter with snowflake pattern in the kitchen downstairs Gustafson since the holiday workshop. Maybe you could put something in doodles to let the owner know it is here and could pick it up sometime. I am sure they will want it to use next holiday season and may not have it. Thank You

DO YOU HAPPEN TO HAVE . . .

Do you happen to have some pots and pans, a card table and chairs or any kind of table (like end tables), a desk, a book shelf, or some standing lamps that you were thinking of giving away? If so, maybe you'd consider giving them to Aly Adachi whose roommate moved out and has left her a bit short on these items. Give her a call at 7-4269. (Aly knows I'm doing this.)

DECORATIONS
Someone, we can't remember who, thought it would be neat if everyone (who wanted to) submitted pictures of their holiday decorations. It would be fun to see how other people decorate - or to submit some of their traditions that have been handed down from generation to generation.

CHRISTMAS AT THE HODGSON HOUSE
Our Christmas tree. I stopped putting ornaments on it a couple years ago. We just go the natural route now...with lots of lights.

Here's Santa Goose and his 3 Rudolph Reinducks! They greet our guests at the front door.

No stockings hung here by the chimney with care, no sir. We don't take any chances of having them filled with coal... ;=)

The kids (Boyd and Stella) are just so tuckered out after all the Christmas activities.

JUST FOR FUN

BON VOYAGE!
Happy Holidays - I thought I'd share some of the pictures from my Ixtapa Trip. A high school girlfriend and I turned 40 a day a part, and we have celebrated our 21st our 30th and now our 40th together. Of course being so close to Christmas, my Mom decided that a family trip would be fun - so along with Carol, Vince, Randy and me, were my sister, her husband and my two-year-old nephew.

It was a trip never to be forgotten, that is for sure...I've attached a letter my Mom sent out that details some of the events we encountered. I've traveled various times to Mexico since I was a senior in high school and never have encountered a trip like this one...it is true that you can laugh now...two weeks later!!

I hope you all have a wonderful 2008...I know I'm super glad it's a new year!!!

2007 - WHAT A YEAR!

We sent the oldest off to college this year. Joe is attending UND. Although, that’s only a few miles from home…we estimate he has been home twice since August!
John and I still get to have Josh at home for a few more years and will always manage to keep us busy. Josh is in 8th Grade at Manvel School. He continues in band and choir. He participated in football at Manvel this year. Manvel 7th and 8th graders play football with Valley Junior High School in GF. Josh loves playing football and I was very proud to see him play again this year.
John continues to work as loader operator for Transystems.
Last year I changed positions at UND and now work at the Honors Program. I started there last March, so it hasn’t been quite a year yet. I get to work with actual students and a wonderful staff. I have learned so much there already.
Our big news in this letter will be our change of address. We finally moved to our new home located along County Rd. 5 outside of Manvel.

We hope our New Year’s greeting has found you all happy and well this year. May you find happiness, peace and understanding in the New Year!
Please stop by to visit us if you are ever near! Our new address is: 2693 17th St NE - Manvel, ND 58256.

MELISSA'S CRUISE
Here are pics of our cruise.

Aboard the cruise ship in the Port of Miami before setting sail

St. Thomas, Virgin Islands - our cruise ship is right above my head

Magen's Bay Beach, one of the world's top 10 beaches

I had my first horse ride!

O Christmas trees, O Christmas trees

I picked up a jellyfish!

Some of the things we included: feeding, petting, and snorkeling with sting rays in the Bahamas; a tour of St. Thomas which included two hours at Magen's Bay Beach; horseback riding at one of the points of the Bermuda Triangle (rainforest in Puerto Rico); clear-bottom kayaking in Grand Turk, Turks & Caicos; and hearing both calypso and Christmas music within the same minute!
