OLLI OPEN HOUSE
Thank you to everyone who volunteered to help with the OLLI Open House held this past Tuesday evening. It was a huge success and garnered 25 new members!! OLLI @ UND now has 233 members. None of this could have been done without the help, support (mentally and physically) and encouragement from everyone at DCE. We can ALL celebrate this!

INPUT ON UND WEB
If you have not already done so, the Marketing Team encourages everyone in the Division to comment about the new direction University Relations is taking with its Web design.

Here is the message from University Relations:

UND launches blog, invites comments on new Web design

The Office of University Relations is redesigning UND's Web site to make it easier for users to find information they need. And we'd like your comments. We've developed a blog so you can share your opinions and read what others think. Just click on the blog link at www.und.edu

The new page has a number of features, including news feeds, videos, podcasts, and social media. We're working on building the UND brand, and this redesign is part of that initiative. Here's what's new:

* Icons lead directly to the most-requested pages
* The page will adapt to fill your screen down to 1024 x 768
* "Accordion" links on left side let you find information with fewer clicks
* We hope to eliminate a lot of second layer pages
* Links to social media let you connect with the UND community
* You can choose how your pages look

As we receive your comments, we'll take them into consideration as a whole and make changes, so visit often. We plan to launch the new home page later in the spring, and we'll work with departments to launch new pages over the summer. Once we have the final design, we'll develop templates to make implementation easier.

So, let us know what you think! Please note that not all links are live; we're mostly interested in seeing your comments about the design and approach.

We wish to thank Sara for her hard work and dedication during the past two years. Sara will formally switch positions on January 22, 2008. Sara has asked not to have a farewell event at this time.

Once again, congratulations Sara.

ALEXIS MOVING TO FARGO
It is with regret that I announce that Alexis Slade has resigned from her position in Distance Degree Programs as a program assistant. Her last day with us was January 7. While she was out on maternity leave, her husband accepted a transfer to Fargo for his job, so they are in the process of moving. We are very appreciative of the work that Alexis did with us while she was here, and we wish her and her family the best of luck with everything in the future.

MEMORIAL UNION GUIDELINES
We are fortunate to enjoy a close working relationship between the Memorial Union and departments within Continuing Education. To make sure that we continue to support each others needs, I wanted to let DCE staff know of some Memorial Union policies and procedures you may not be aware exist. We are starting to post our policies on-line, on our web site, and they can be found at the following link:

http://www.union.und.nodak.edu/policies/policies.htm

One policy you may want to review is our Posting Policy. Since DCE hosts many meetings and events at the Union, directional signage and posters are always important. We welcome the chance to work with you, and we have several options to assist you here on-site you may not be aware of. Please call us and let us help, before you invest in time and resources to make your signs, etc. Thanks,

Tony Trimarco, Union Director

Above & Beyond the Call of Duty!!

DDP Team is THANKFUL!

This is a hectic time of year for Distance Degree Program staff, but it was exceptionally hectic with Alexis resigning her position, the Division taking on additional responsibilities for Nursing programs, and a new program starting in Fargo. My, oh my. So, we would like to thank everyone for their additional support to "get this semester going", in particular:

• Odella, IT and Online Teams - for providing strong support and last minute troubleshooting and testing new processes
• Certificate Programs - for assisting in answering the hundreds of phone calls that came in the first few days of classes
• Denise - for pitching in and helping with registrations, textbooks, etc.
• Josh - for recognizing the stress of the start of the semester and giving reprieve from meetings
• DDP staff - for the great customer service that continues to be provided
• Many others in the Division - for offering assistance, and just for being there to listen and offer empathy

What a great start to the Spring Semester. Thank you.

Heidi and Lynette

Is there someone in your program area who has gone beyond the call of duty recently? Please tell us about it by submitting it to Doodles next week!

JUST SO YOU KNOW

GRAMMAR GOALS

A Prospectus on Prospective vs. Perspective

Our prospects can affect how we view the world, our perspective. The prospect of a New Year can change our perspective on how we lead our lives. The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission requires that financial advisers provide a prospectus to prospective investors so that the investors have a clear perspective of the pluses and minuses of a potential investment. UND’s Enrollment Services advises prospective students on the admission requirements of the university and on how an education obtained from UND can enhance not only students’ perspectives of the world but also prospective employers’ perspectives of students as soundly educated. Prospective parents often undergo a change in perspective and adjust their priorities and activities to reflect the soon to be life-changing and lifelong commitment of raising a child. (Yes, many people perceive children to be stale dated at the age of eighteen and out of the home, but most parents would agree that prospect is not always the case.)

Something that is prospective is expected or anticipated, has potential, or is deemed likely to occur. Perspective is our point of view, our mental comprehension of something, or how we interrelate ideas—the whole to its parts, or the converse.

Prospective and perspective are easily confused and misused by writers as synonyms. This leads to what grammarians refer to as a malapropism—“the use of a word sounding somewhat like the one intended but ludicrously wrong in the context.”* A malapropism can be used to great comedic effect as evidenced by Shakespeare and by one of my favorite comedians, Norm Crosby. However, in serious writing, a malapropism can quickly debilitate the strength of any argument you are attempting to convey to your readers.

INFO EXCHANGE

FOUND: GLASS PLATTER
We have had a glass platter with snowflake pattern in the kitchen downstairs Gustafson since the holiday workshop. Maybe you could put something in doodles to let the owner know it is here and could pick it up sometime. I am sure they will want it to use next holiday season and may not have it. Thank You
