UND's 11th President: Dr. Robert Kelley

Dr. Robert Kelley

Dr. Robert Kelley, dean of the College of Health Sciences and professor of medical education and public health at the University of Wyoming since 1999, will be the 11th president of the University of North Dakota at Grand Forks.

The North Dakota State Board of Higher Education selected Kelley after interviewing him Monday, Feb. 4, at the UND Memorial Union River Valley Room. Kelley accepted the position Thursday, Feb. 7 and will start July 1, 2008. He succeeds Dr. Charles Kupchella, who was named UND's tenth president on April 20, 1999 and who announced his retirement in January 2007. Kelley was recommended by the UND Presidential Search Committee.

“Both Marcia and I are very excited about the opportunity being offered to us,” Kelley said. “Both of us look forward to moving to Grand Forks, starting in our new position and getting acquainted with the university community and the city of Grand Forks. There are so many very capable people that we'll be able to work with as we move this University forward."

FAREWELL TO ALY
Aly Adachi has resigned her position as Program Assistant for Certificate Programs. Her last day with the Division was February 1. Aly decided that our North Dakota winters are not for her, and is headed back to Hawaii. Hard to believe as we've had 50 below wind chills and are in a blizzard watch, I know. ;) We thank Aly for her service to the Division and wish her the best of luck as she pursues her next adventure.

U2 UPDATE
Do you want to learn how to survive WITHOUT using a checking account?? Have you heard of 'Cash Management' - using a cash only system?? If you want to learn more about it and also learn how to recognize and curb impulse spending, U2 has got a workshop for you. "Cash Management" will be presented by the Village Family Service Center on Monday, February 11 from 9 to 10:30 a.m. in Skalicky Room 211. There are still some seats available for this session— you're welcome to drop by.

KEEP ALIVE
UND Staff Senate contacted me last month with a great idea for a U2 session. Tim Shea, a paramedic from Altru is the presenter, and what you learn in this workshop just might save someone's life!! "Keeping Them Alive Until Ambulance Arrives" is a one hour presentation that will be offered twice on February 19 - either from Noon to 1 p.m. or 5-6:00 p.m. Both sessions will be held in the Memorial Union, Lecture Bowl. It's the goal of Staff Senate to train at least one person from each department in some basic lifesaving measures you can take to help someone until help arrives.

BAFA BAFA
What the heck is 'BaFa BaFa' you might ask?? I got a call from Keith Malaterre from UND American Indian Student Services last month and he asked me if U2 would like to sponsor a unique cultural diversity training program called 'BaFa BaFa' Cultural Simulation Exercise. This two-hour exercise teaches participants about cultural differences, assumptions, and misunderstandings. The overall purpose of the exercise is to increase cultural awareness and sensitivity among participants and to improve their ability to work with and relate to members from cultures other than their own. This training will be held on February 28 from Noon to 2 p.m. at Swanson Hall, Room 10-12. Seating is limited for this and the registration deadline is February 25!!

PLEASE REMEMBER, U2 IS FOR ALL UND EMPLOYEES AND THAT INCLUDES DCE GRAD AND UNDERGRAD STUDENT EMPLOYEES SO PLEASE ENCOURAGE THEM TO ATTEND ANY U2 SESSIONS.

GRAMMAR GOALS

A Matter of Degrees

When you refer generally to an academic degree, you lowercase the spelling:

John received a bachelor’s degree from Harvey Mudd College.

(“Our name is Mudd, and we’re proud of it.” A quote from the college’s Web site.)

Susan earned a master’s degree from Slippery Rock University.

Christine attained a doctor of philosophy degree from Whatsamatta U.

The shortened forms are bachelor’s, master’s, and doctorate. Please note the apostrophe in the general references to bachelor’s and master’s degrees.

You should capitalize all abbreviations of academic degrees without using periods: BA, MS, and PhD. (In conservative usage, you retain the periods.) Whether or not you use periods in the abbreviations, the key is to be consistent throughout your document.

If you make a general reference to the branch of learning for a bachelor’s or master’s degree, you drop the apostrophe and s. Therefore, the academic title is as follows: a bachelor of arts degree or a master of science degree. However, you need to capitalize the name of the degree when you focus specifically on the subject or discipline of the degree earned by an individual or you use the academic credential in a title after an individual’s name in running text, or on a business card, résumé, or diploma:

              Bachelor of Science in Biology

Master of Arts in American History

              Doctor of Philosophy in Physics

Joan Smith, Doctor of Philosophy, will be presenting today’s lecture.

Please do not use bachelor’s or master’s when you cite the specific forms of those degrees.

You omit social titles (such as Dr.) before someone’s name when an academic degree or professional credential follows the name:

His neighbor is Phil Payne, DDS.

Dr. Payne is originally from Tuscaloosa, Alabama.

Denis MacLeod
Thank you to Jennifer Swangler for this week’s grammar goal.
