STUDIO ONE FEATURES THIS WEEK

BODY IMAGE WEEK
Learn how one college campus is encouraging students to love their bodies on this week’s edition of Studio One.

A recent study by Dove found that only two percent of women world wide, view themselves as beautiful. Many believe popular-culture beauty stereotypes for men and women can cause people to become dissatisfied with their bodies. However, the University of North Dakota recently held a “Love Your Body Week” where professionals gathered to talk about health at every size. Watch to learn about creating a positive body image.

QUILTING CLUB
Also on the show this week, one group of women from rural Minnesota began a quilting club, but their members do more than create patchwork blankets. Find out how this quilting group has become a humorous and supportive retreat for its members.

Studio One is an award-winning news and information program produced at the University of North Dakota Television Center. The program airs live on UND Channel 3 on Thursdays at 5 p.m. Re-broadcasts can be seen at 7 a.m., noon, 7 p.m. and 11 p.m. daily and on Saturdays at 10 a.m. Prairie Public Television airs Studio One on Saturday at 6 a.m. The program can also be seen by viewers in Fargo, Bismarck/Mandan and Minot, N.D.; Minneapolis, Minn.; Denver, Colo.; and Winnipeg, Manitoba.

THANK YOU FROM PDE
Professional Development for Educators would like to extend a special thank-you to Marsy and Kathy in Marketing. They had prepared promotional flyers/postcards, ads, news releases and registration brochures for the Instructional Leadership Academy that was held last Friday at the Alerus Center. Much of the success in getting the great turnout that we did at the event can be attributed to their wonderful work! Also, many thanks for their "extra" efforts with some last minutes details for the Instructional Leadership Academy last Friday! Their work always sends a message of professionalism and expertise! Thanks ever so much from the whole PDE team!

UCEA MARKETING SEMINAR IN SAN DIEGO

I was able to attend the UCEA Marketing Seminar in San Diego last week. The conference was good and continued to confirm that we are moving the Division in the right direction.

My husband, Steve, also joined me and we were able to turn it into a mini vacation. In our short time there, we hit most of the highlights: Gaslamp Quarter, Little Italy, Old Town, Balboa Park, Seaport Village, the Navy pier area, and of course, the San Diego Zoo and SeaWorld.

Although it was warmer than it was back here, we were surprised how cold it felt to us when the sun wasn't out. It rained some the first day (see picture of Steve shivering below) and in the evenings, two native North Dakotan's were almost wishing they had their winter coats!

U2 UPDATE

BAFA BAFA
What the heck is 'BaFa BaFa' you might ask?? I got a call from Keith Malaterre from UND American Indian Student Services last month and he asked me if U2 would like to sponsor a unique cultural diversity training program called 'BaFa BaFa' Cultural Simulation Exercise. This two-hour exercise teaches participants about cultural differences, assumptions, and misunderstandings. The overall purpose of the exercise is to increase cultural awareness and sensitivity among participants and to improve their ability to work with and relate to members from cultures other than their own. This training will be held on February 28 from Noon to 2 p.m. at Swanson Hall, Room 10-12. Seating is limited for this and the registration deadline is Monday, February 25!!

PLEASE REMEMBER, U2 IS FOR ALL UND EMPLOYEES AND THAT INCLUDES DCE GRAD AND UNDERGRAD STUDENT EMPLOYEES SO PLEASE ENCOURAGE THEM TO ATTEND ANY U2 SESSIONS.

I would like to thank everyone in DCE for their incredible outpouring of support for my family during this difficult time. All the gifts, food, thoughts and prayers have been very much appreciated as we have put our son to rest. Such an agonizing time I could never before imagine, but our family is determined to make good things come from our tragedy.
Billy is in a better place now, and we have his awesome son, Jace. Even in my grief, I have gained a renewed appreciation for life and for my remaining loved ones. We are truly blessed.

GRAMMAR GOALS

HAND OUTS AND INS
When you provide directions to your readers, you should delete the word hand from phrases like “upper right-hand.” You can safely assume that someone capable of reading what you have written has the capacity to distinguish right from left without looking at his or her hands.

On the other hand, when you describe the close relationship between two people or concepts, the correct phrase is “hand in hand,” not “hand and hand.” The former communicates a greater intimacy between the parties or concepts than the latter.

FULLY-STAGED PRODUCTION OF "CARMINA BURANA" OPENS FEB. 23
"Carmina Burana," by Carl Orff, is set for 7:30 p.m. Saturday, February 23, at the Chester Fritz Auditorium. A spectacle of voice, music, dance and color, this unique concert will feature more than 250 performers from the Greater Grand Forks Symphony Orchestra, Grand Forks Master Chorale, University of North Dakota choirs, and North Dakota Ballet Company. Orff composed the "Carmina" to accompany lyrics drawn from a long-lost 13th Century German manuscript celebrating life, love, and nature. The result: a worldwide favorite, popular even among listeners who ordinarily avoid classical music. Excerpts have been featured in several movies, including "Lord of the Rings," and in broadcasts on radio and television.

Contact the Chester Fritz Auditorium box office at 777-4090 for ticket information.
