Whose Entry Is in the Who’s Who of Comedy?
For baseball fans everywhere, the answer is Abbott and Costello, whose famous routine “Who’s on First” has become a part of baseball lore (the last name of the first baseman on their fictional team is Who). If you have difficulty distinguishing between who’s (the contraction for “who is” or “who has”) and whose (the possessive form of who that may refer to people or things), this sample from Abbott and Costello’s dialogue may help, or perhaps, like Lou Costello, you will never figure out who’s on first:
Costello: Have you gotta first baseman on first?
Abbott: Certainly.
Costello: Then who's playing first?
Abbott: Absolutely.
Costello: When you pay off the first baseman every month, who gets the money?
Abbott: Every dollar of it. Why not? The man is entitled to it.
Costello: Who is?
Abbott: Yes.
Costello: So who gets it?
Abbott: Why shouldn’t he?
Abbott: Sometimes his wife comes down and collects it.
Costello: Whose wife?
Abbott: Yes.*
This dialogue doesn’t do justice to their routine. Here is a link to their full act on YouTube:
