Training Overview:
Instructional Coaches and leaders act as change agents to improve the quality of classroom instruction, which leads to improved student learning. Instructional leaders are needed to help teachers work collaboratively to solve problems and make decisions that will impact achievement. These leaders skillfully assist teachers to reflect on and critique their practice to improve effectiveness in the classroom. In order to do so, they must be skilled in working with adults. During these two days participants will become comfortable with facilitation skills and communication skills. Participants will also gain tools and structures for conducting productive data conversations.
Teams of Lead Teachers/Coaches and their Principals/Administrators are invited to attend to support each other in your outreach to teachers within your school buildings. PLEASE NOTE: It is not necessary to have participated in the initial training, held in February 2010, to attend and gain the benefits of the curriculum and content to be covered during this event.
Taking the Lead training will be led by Christ Bryan, a consultant and member of the Training Cadre from the National Staff Development Council.
During the June training, you will:
- Develop the communication/relationship skills of instructional coaches so that they can influence school cultures and build trusting and productive relationships with their clients.
- Develop skills to work collaboratively with other school resource personnel.
- Understand how to use facilitate data conversations to make instructional decisions.
- Develop questioning skills that promote deep thinking and reflection.
- Explore an array of job embedded facilitation strategies to use in a variety of coaching situations.
*FIRST TIME PARTICIPANTS will receive a copy of the book used in the initial training, Taking the Lead: New Roles for Teachers and School-based Coaches, by Joellen Killion and Cindy Harrison. This book explores the complex, multi-faceted roles played by teachers, leaders, and school-based coaches, and examines district and school expectations, hiring practices, and deployment of these educators. Includes a CD-ROM with more than 200 pages of resources in PDF format plus IC maps for the school-based staff developer role.
*If you attended Part 1 of this session in February, PLEASE bring your book, "Taking the Lead: New Roles for Teachers and School-Based Coaches" with you to this session, as you WILL NOT receive an additional one*
